Antony Wilks Arrested & Charged
David Cameron’s 74-year-old titled father-in-law was allegedly robbed in a struggle at his private estate in northern Lincolnshire.
Antony Wilks was brought from custody before Grimsby Magistrate’s Court today – the day his alleged victim celebrated his 74th birthday. Prosecutor Mark Haigh QC told the court that Sir Reginald was in his car at Flixborough when he saw two men in a VW Golf, which ended up facing his vehicle.
A man is said to have left the car and come up to Sir Reginald’s car window, which was fully down, and told him: ‘I’ll have your phone, ta.’
He is said to have leaned into the car and grabbed Sir Reginald’s left forearm and taken the mobile phone, claimed Mr. Haigh. There is said to have been a struggle before the phone was wrestled from Sir Reginald’s grip and the robber got back into the car which was driven away.
Wilks, who has previous links with Scunthorpe and Caistor, was arrested by Humberside Police officers on May 7 in Gunness, Scunthorpe. The case was sent to Grimsby Crown Court.
Wilks, who was wearing a dark blue full EA7 tracksuit, indicated no plea to the charge. He appeared in the secure dock because the Skype link to the police’s Birchin Way custody suite in Grimsby was not being used.
Wilks was represented by Ian Haywood QC, who asked for him to be given conditional bail. District Judge Daniel Curtis remanded Wilks in custody. Sir Reginald has been the eighth baronet of Normanby in the County of Lincoln since 1977. He was educated at Eton College like his son-in-law David Cameron.
Samantha Cameron, 49, is his eldest daughter from his first marriage in 1969 to Viscountess Astor. He has three children from his second marriage in 1977. He was a Conservative councilor on Humberside County Council from 1985 to 1993.
Normanby Hall is a Regency mansion set in an estate of 300 acres and the country park includes a farming museum, cafe, woodland, and a walled garden.
