Cevher Toktas Bio
Cevher Toktas is a Turkish footballer who last played as a center-back for Bursa Yıldırımspor in the Turkish Regional Amateur League. In May 2020, Toktaş admitted to murdering his five-year-old son by suffocating him with a pillow while in the hospital.
He is 32 years old.
Toktaş made his professional debut for Gençlerbirliği OFTAŞ in the Süper Lig on 2 March 2008, coming on as a substitute in the 89th minute for Serkan Atak in the away match against Çaykur Rizespor, which finished as a 0–0 draw. In total, he made seven appearances for Gençlerbirliği OFTAŞ/Hacettepe in the Süper Lig.
Killed His Son
On 23 April 2020, Toktaş’s son Kasım, aged five, was brought to Dortcelik Children’s Hospital in Bursa with a high fever, breathing difficulties, and coughing. This was thought to be caused by COVID-19. Later that day, Kasım died while in the ICU, which was believed to have been caused by the disease.
However, Toktaş went to the police eleven days later on 4 May to confess he had murdered his son while alone in the hospital room.
Toktaş admitted to suffocating his son with a pillow over the head for fifteen minutes until he died, before calling a doctor into the room. Cevher Toktas, who said he did not disclose the crime with his family, was subsequently arrested while awaiting trial.
In the police report, he stated that he had never loved his son and murdered him after having a nervous breakdown in the hospital room but later confessed after feeling remorse.
The 32-year-old father and former Super Lig turned minor league soccer player was arrested and charged with “murdering a close relative”, which is punishable by life in prison in Turkey, according to the Daily Sabah. Super Lig is Turkey’s top-level soccer league.
Daily Sabah reported that Toktas told police he smothered his son with a pillow for 15 minutes before calling for help from hospital staff, which he only did to throw suspicion off himself. Toktas told nurses that Kasim was having trouble breathing and he was rushed to the ICU.
According to the Daily Sabah Toktas gave a statement to police. He said:
“I pressed a pillow on my son who was lying on his back. For 15 minutes, I pressed down on the pillow without lifting it up. My son was struggling during that time. After he stopped moving, I lifted the pillow. Then I yelled for doctors to help to draw any suspicions away from me. I never loved my younger son after he was born. I don’t know why I don’t love him. The sole reason why I killed him that day is that I didn’t like him. I don’t have any mental issues.”
The child died two hours later.
